As a young musician straight out of Texas, Radney Foster spent the lengthy drives in between tour stops reading the likes of John Steinbeck, Larry McMurtry, and Harper Lee. Over 30 years of artist cuts later, there is no question that he himself is an established storyteller.
His newest endeavor, For You To See The Stars is a project made up of two parts – a book and a CD. The book is a collection of short stories, and Working Title Farm is the publisher. Though the stories are fiction, written from Foster’s upbringing on the Mexican border in Del Rio, TX. The story that most closely resembles memoir, “Bridge Club,” is a humorous and poignant retelling of the song “Greatest Show on Earth,” a recollection of playing music with family and friends on the back porch on a Saturday night.
While it’s evident that Texas has always been an inspiration for his music, in For You To See The Stars, Foster explores various landscapes, both physical and emotional, from the story of a retired spy in New Orleans, to the tale of a Dallas lawyer wandering the Rocky Mountains in search of redemption, to a post apocalyptic parable of a world in endless war.
Travis Jean Emporium
As some of you may remember I recently met Scott Mitchell on my way to the Savannah Book Festival. Scott is the owner of a wonderful shop in downtown Macon, Ga. called Travis Jean Emporium. It was my cousin, Kaye Hlavity, that introduced me to Scott in hopes that he and I could work it out so that we could put together a book signing event for me at one of his Friday Night Social Events.
I’m happy to say it looks like it is going to happen. It is tentatively set for Friday, April 6th. This is just after the monumental Cherry Blossom Festival that Macon has hosted forever. With all eyes on the Cherry Blossom Festival the final details will come soon. But, rest assured they will be. As soon as I get them I will pass them on to you.
So, mark your calendars, Friday, April 6th, and run on down to Macon, Ga., and buy a book from me, and a painting from Scott.
